Rupert Whale

English artist Rupert Whale often addresses the dual nature of painting and print as both a two-dimensional, flat surface and an illusory object. In screenprinting, he uses a freehand squeegee technique: inks drag softly across the paper in unique combinations. He investigates the overlay of colour, building up translucent layers which extend in different directions. His monotype Shape series from the 1970s looks to Pop Art and the work of Robert Rauschenberg, playing with space and by combining oblong forms.
